The first questions should be, is it an
- internally or
- externally controlled sauna heater and
- How long does the heater need to reach full operating temperature?
Wood-fuelled sauna heater versus electric heater.
The electric heater is suitable for people who want to switch on the heater and not have to worry about anything else. Popular models are:
- Harvia
- Sawo
Electric operation makes handling easy. No dirt is produced, which makes the electric sauna heater virtually maintenance-free. The energy supply should be between six and eight kilowatts. These heaters are usually operated with sauna stones.
The wood-fired sauna heater
Compared to the electric heater, the wood-fired heater is undoubtedly the more original sauna heater, as it also creates the typical sauna atmosphere. These heaters are downright hungry for wood and therefore require a lot of work. Tip: Sauna heaters can only be realised under certain conditions. Due to the lack of exhaust air, this heater cannot be installed in a basement sauna. That said, a wood-burning sauna heater should not be left unattended, which can have a certain detrimental effect on a sauna experience with friends.
Some suppliers, such as MISA, have sauna heaters that can be operated both electrically and with wood.
